Robert the Bruce's Royal Forest Tour with no-dig tree planting
A special event to celebrate? Whether for a birthday or anniversary this will truly celebrate the occasion.
This is a guided walk through the once royal hunting forests of Robert the Bruce. You’ll discover Scots Pine, Downy birch, oak trees and remarkable 300-year-old veteran trees.
You’ll discover what goes into a long-term forest management plan and the different actions in differing areas of the forest. Whether that’s tubing natural regnerating trees, checking the growth of recently planted cherry, or halo thinning around great specimens, there’s a whole forest world to uncover.
Planting your very own Scots Pine, later to become a home to the greatest number of conservation species in Scotland, is something many of our guests treasure, particularly with our no-dig method.
Available all-year round £40 per person, approx 1.5 hr duration. Your dog is very welcome too

Guided history & wildlife tour
What’s the link between pretzels, St Margaret and the Scotland Yard chequered band?
Come and find out about the history of Scotland from the C11th through the eyes of this estate: pilgrimages, medieval barons, corn threshing machines and designed historic landscapes.
We will also introduce you to woodland fungi, the scent of a Douglas fir needle, and we’ll look out for woodpeckers, owls and sumptuous mosses.
Available all-year round £40 per person, approx 1.5 hr duration. Your dog is very welcome too.

Evening bat walk with potluck moth!
“My, what bigs ears you have Grandma!” so said the little moth to the long-eared bat. This bat knows its sonar is audible to moths - who make a sharp exit on hearing - so it needs to reduce its volume.
But if the bat reduces its echolation too much then it won’t hear it bounce back when it detects a moth. The solution? Tympanic ears - these provide a large drum-like surface for the quieter sonar to bounce off - and hence the development of the long-eared bat.
This is but one example of co-evolution in bats and moths - come and join an evening bat safari to learn more. We’ll use bat detectors which turn bat sonar into audible sounds, indicate the species and we’ll also guide you in using a moth trap at your accommodation.
Add to your stay between May and September as it requires a warm dry dusk - when bats are out hunting for insects. If the evening temperatures are above 10oC then it may be possible to do in April or October.
Cost is £40 per person, approx 1 to 1.5 hr duration. Your dog is very welcome too.
