How to build a tiny home in the forest

Over the next few weeks we're going to show the background to the building of our woodland cabins the Schenbothies.

We'll cover location, building plan, build design, energy efficiency and the Scottish designers you'll find inside.

Week 1: Location.

What would be your ideal location? By the sea, a river, lake or amongst the rainforest? With fairies amongst the ancient trees dancing on the lichen? That was the one for us. And what was on our guest wish list? Large south-facing windows for warmth and views into the distance.

Week 2: The Plan.

How would you build your tiny home?

First up, what’s the purpose – is it an artist studio, home office or for friends and family visiting? Or if
it’s going to change what are your fundamentals for all three?

Define the purpose of your zones so that there is no wasted ‘intermediate’ space: work out the flow of your kitchen, living and bathroom.

Clearly space is of the essence however one key tip is to make a least one generously sized area so you can comfortably relax or do your yoga.

And even though everything is small have something big – like a big picture window or a generously-sized shower.
